Yesterday morning my daughter Tina and I were in the living room and we hear rap rap rap, I heard it several times. We both wondered what was that noise, then realized it was a noise I had heard several times before over the course of the years. Generally it is around 5am when I have heard the same noise. I told Tina that it was a woodpecker on the road sign out in front of the house but I had no idea what kind of woodpecker it was. So I got my camera, and we went outside to investigate it. We played private eye :) sneaking up on this crazy bird. I got some pretty good pictures of it, and found it to be a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker! At first I thought it was a young Pileated Woodpecker, but Tina was quick to determine it was not. Now, I have been in the Northeast all of my life, and to the best of my knowledge I have never seen one. It was a new bird for me! Here is the picture of my crazy bird who is out there now at 6:41 am on the road sign making all the noise he possible can!

You mean there really is such a creature, a real Yellow Bellied Sapsucker?!? And YOU got a picture ~
That is a great picture of the Yellow Bellied Sapsucker.. I have several here on the farm in Iowa. I think they are such a cool bird..They make huge holes in trees for their nests.. Keep taking pictures of birds.. I love birds and have quite a few different ones that visit my feeders.. The orioles and hummingbirds are busy right now eating and eating.. The orioles eat 1 cup of grape jelly a day.. I buy grape jelly 6 jars at a time.. Don't want to run out of their favorite food.
Very cool. We have some but I have never gotten a picture of one.
Now here, we have them all year long. But we get excited to see a Pileated. Hubby saw one this spring, but it didn't stay. Nice picture.
